my tootsies don't pop

It seems that everywhere I look there are cute toes--everyone is sporting a pedicure. Embellished, shiny, bright and detailed toenails peek out of sandals and flip flops at the grocery store, ball park, farmer's market and church. I lean into a stretch at karate class and the bare feet next to my face have adorable little flowers atop coral polish. I look at my own feet--wide, ugly, plain and with bunions to boot. Ew. Ugh.
It occurs to me that I could buy a bottle of bright pink nail polish and dot it across my toenails. It would probably perk up my feet's appearance and let's face it--all the cool girls are doing it, right? I imagine how pulled together I could look with bright pink toenails, sophisticated even. Painted toenails might even excuse some of my other fashion faux pas.
Then it occurs to me that the polish will wear away and chip. And then what? Maintenance, that's what. And just like that, the fantasy dies.

  1. From another gal with polish-less nails, I say, Hear, Hear to going au naturel!

  2. Mine have been polish-less for months now. ;) Like you said, maintenance, just another thing to add to my list - no thanks.

  3. I have polish on them...at the moment. It was a moment of insane jealousy over a co-workers pretty toes. This will last until they start to chip and that will be the end of it. It's sort of like the issue with coloring my hair. This kind of thing takes time and money. I have neither. So the grays are starting to mix in with the rest and I'm ok with it.

  5. I confess to being a polisher. I get two pedicures a year--summer and Christmas and do my own the rest of the time.

I spend most of my life in sandals and flip-flops and that pop of pink or red or lavender or bronze is the perfect little daily lift when I glance down.

How about training and paying one of your boys to do it?

  6. When I do my own nails (which is not very often), I usually go with pale pink so that it looks good for longer.

Otherwise, my favorite is hussy red.

  9. I have been wearing "Starlet" by Sally Hansen on my toes for a couple of years. I've tried other shades but I can't quit you, Starlet! I also can no longer go naked. I had to remove my polish before my knee surgery and I had my mother paint me up as soon as I got home!

Wearing polish on my toes makes me feel more girly, more feminine...and sexier. Even in the winter. Even when there is no one but me to admire my pretty pink toes. Which is most of the time, dammit.

(FYI, I've found that metallic nail polish lasts much longer than non-metallic polish.I generally only need to re-do my toes about once a month.)

  10. Somehow, the whole "decal over polish" on the toes is too much for me. I'm just not a mani/pedi kind of gal.

  11. Are those your feet? If so, your bunions are not that bad. You should have seen mine. They were so bad that I had surgery on both feet.

I'm one of those pink toenail people, but I'm not fanatical about them being perfect and I do it myself. After 2 surgeries, no one touches my feet.

  12. If it would be fun and a treat to look down to pink toes, then do it. But if not? Skip it! Your feet are hardly Hobbit-like. They are lovely and useful - polish or no.

  13. I tried to paint my toenails the other day and almost went into labor. It was not comfortable. A professional pedicure sounds like a much better idea. :)

  14. Oh but there is nothing better than a good manicure and foot massage.... It can turn your whole day around.

My toes are red at the moment-- Because I'm worth it, Oophs, that's my hair :-)

  15. I'd like to go polish-less, but seriously? I'd have to wear closed toe shoes all the time because my nails are so disgustingly screwed up from years of soccer playing.

  16. Mine are bare this summer, too. There just isn't room in the budget this year for pedicures.

  18. I love me a pedicure. I even have painted toe nails all winter long. I did have bunion surgery. It was way worse than childbirth.
