hack n' rant

I've been on a horse pill of an antibiotic since Thursday (twice a day with food) and things are still pretty grim. Last night I was lying in bed and swore I heard the cat purring. Turns out it was the gunk in my lungs making that sound when I breathed. I've never had pneumonia before (to my knowledge) and let me tell you, it wipes you out. I have no energy. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Plus I sound like a chain smoker every time I cough or laugh. And now my sinuses are clogged giving me a headache and stuffed ears. Being sick stinks.

Last night I flipped through the channels a little and saw an ad for something called "Yaz." It is just me or is that the dumbest name ever? Yaz. That is a stupid name for anything--medicinal, edible, mechanical or requiring some assembly.

And Dixie Carter died last week which got me to thinking about TV shows I miss. Designing Women and Murphy Brown. Ed and Northern Exposure. News Radio and Wings and Spin City. What happened to the well-crafted sitcom? What happened to smart, strong female characters like Murphy and Maggie and Helen and Nikki? My friends tell me they're all on CSI: Miami/New York/Cleveland or on cable in shows like Weeds and The Closer.

Spill it, reader. What are you watching these days? What TV shows do you miss? Warning: if you watch this with coffee in your mouth, you will require a napkin.

  1. Oh, so sorry to hear you're sick. I had pneumonia once...it took me quite a while to totally get back to normal. You know which sitcom I miss? The Naked Truth. Loved that show. I'm not watching anything regularly now. Feel better soon. xo

  2. I’m still mad they cancelled “Sports Night” – Peter Krause, Felicity Huffman, Robert Guillaume, Josh Charles – it was SO GOOD! Do NOT get me started on “Pushing Daisies”…. Feel better soon!

  3. I have two major shows:

Bones (Hot Seeley Booth...he'd kick the pnuemonia right out of you....promise; and plenty of smart females)

Brothers and Sisters (just a good old prime time soap opera that I adore)

  4. Pneumonia stinks. Will pray you feel MUCH better and re-energized soon!
Oh, I did love Designing Women and Murphy Brown. Those sassy, smart women characters are just the sort who one wants to know is real life. There's not really anything on t.v. these days that holds my attention. (Not sure if that says more about the offerings on the idiot box or my attention span, though.)

  7. Rest, rest and more rest when you have pneumonia. And don't even bother with the tv... watching a bug fly in circles provides more entertainment most days!

I hope you're feeling better soon!

  8. I miss my News Radio!!! LOVED IT.
    Also Wings. *sigh*
    And Spin City!

You are right. Where did all the good sitcoms go?

I'm watching Big Bang Theory these days (funny...well written) and Parks and Rec (hilarious).

I heard Modern Family was good...but haven't checked it out yet.

Hope your cat mucous clears up soon and you are back to your old (metaphorically) self soon!

  9. We have a handful we DVR throughout the week ... busy schedule ... but without fail the entire crew gets together for Glee. I also see they are bringing back Friday Night Lights to network in May which was a big winner here also. I'm not so motivated here either but it has nothing to do with sickness ... yet.

  11. That super sucks about your pneumonia kicking your behind---make sure to take some probiotics and boost your vit C and B's...and take it easy!

Night time tv really stinks it up lately--we'll watch Chuck and I did watch The Middle before our wednesdays got crazy...mainly because its nice to see a family weirder than ours ;)

(Keep up the good work being on the fringe...its nice having company!)

  12. Pneumonia??? Yikes.

You should try watching 30 Rock and Modern Family. Both are my two very favorite shows right now. Quirky comedies...right up my alley.

  13. I forgot about News Radio, that was a super show! Get better soon and take it easy, pneumonia is hard to kick even with antibiotics.

  14. I hope you feel better soon. I don't watch much TV. There really isn't much on that appeals to me. I don't like blood and guts or shoot 'em ups kind of things.

I watch Amazing Race and American Idol. If I remember I'll put on Dancing with the Stars, but I usually forget that one. I've watched some Survivor...I like the competition.

I don't really miss any old shows. I spend my evenings in my workshop creating things and that is my entertainment. :)

  17. I loved the old cable schedule, when I could watch reruns of Northern Exposure every day.

  19. Weeds and Nurse Jackie for strong, quirky women.

With pneumonia the only thing you can do is give in and rest. Your body is talking to you and you need to listen.

  20. Ah, you poor thing. Pneumonia can take months to recover from. Use it to lay in front of your computer and watch all the back episodes of MODERN FAMILY, which is a sitcom that's doing it for me this year. (fair warning: it took me a couple of episodes to warm up to it)

  21. And you're one tough lady - but pneumonia can knock you for a loop - take it easy and get better.

  22. Hi Melissa -- I've given your blog an award today over on mine, if you want to check it out. I hope you're feeling a little better.

  23. That pneumonia better back off. I hope you're feeling like your usual chipper self soon.

As for the teevee? I think all the smart, sassy women moved to the blogosphere.

  24. Oh goodness - I LOVE News Radio so much. God bless Hulu - I watched several seasons one weekend when I had a bad cold.

Speaking of which... I hope you feel better soon!

  25. Ha-you thought it was the cat. Funny. Not that you're sick-that's not funny!! I hope you feel better soon.

    Yaz=not a name created by a woman.

You're right--there are so few good sitcoms anymore. I think the very best thing out there right now is Modern Family. It's the funniest show in a LONG time! The Middle has some really funny episodes too.

Wow, look at Andy Dick, back when he wasn't crazy! That show was so underrated-it was such a fun group of actors together.
