and there isn't any ice cream in my freezer

It's a beautiful day outside but my windows are closed because the farmers are spreading manure on the fields, but that's not the only thing that stinks today.
I have books to read, gardens to tend, pages to write and apples to smash into sauce.
But I don't want to do a thing. Except eat chocolate and gaze outside.
We put Violet the Semi-Stray cat to sleep this morning. Lady Vi, killer of mice, birds, rabbits, rats, squirrels, and on one occasion even a ferret. Violet who purred loudly, never scratched or bit anyone, who made our house cozy and who couldn't move her bowels. Miss Violet who lived here with us for 5 years. Her grave is dug--a deep hole in a sunny spot in the front garden where she used to lurk beneath the birdbath to catch a quick snack. The funeral service will be at 3:30 followed by an early dinner. Her gravestone will be signed by the people who loved her.
I can't find any chocolate. And frankly I have no stomach to eat it if I could.

  1. Oh, I am so sorry to read this. What a horrible way to start the day. But Violet led a happy life, and you gave her that. Take some comfort in that, it's better than chocolate...

  3. Oh, so sorry to hear that. You loved her very much and it showed in your writing. It's good that she's not in pain now, but it's always so sad to say goodbye. (((hugs)))

  8. Ah, Greenie, I am so sorry! It doesn't matter that you knew it was coming, losing a pet is so hard.

I might just have to eat some chocolate to honor your Violet. Yes, that's the kind of selfless friend I am.

    Hugs to you.

  10. Poor dear. One of the stages of grief should be "not even wanting ice cream".

She sounds like she was a fierce and well-loved animal. My sympathies.

  14. Oh, honey. I'm so sorry. Even when it's the right and kind thing, it's never easy. My heart goes out to you and Team Testosterone. I hope you are giving yourself permission to do nothing but look out the window - that seems like a very fitting way to honor Violet.

  15. Sorry to hear this. It's hard to loose a family pet even if she was semi-stray. I do have to say with all the fall color out there she picked a wonderful day.

  19. I'm so, so sorry. It's terrible to lose a beloved pet. We lost our little cat a few years ago, and I still feel a pang when I pass the spot by the raspberry bushes where we buried her. The only comfort I can give is that eventually the happy memories of her will eclipse the sadness of her passing. Take care.
